Extractives Industry: Unlocking Extractive Industry and Artisanal Mine Potential in Developing Nations.
Challenge:
Our client had developed a purpose-fit IOT and blockchain traceability solution, particularly focused on solving for artisanal-scale mine traceability in developing nations. They needed help with clearly articulating and pitching their solution at a governmental / state level.
Process:
A comprehensive immersion process helped us understand the nuances of the problem-solution fit. This understanding, paired with insights from both primary and secondary sources, helped us to co-develop a strategic narrative and proposal.
Outcome:
Our client was given approval, in principle, for their product to be used as the country-wide (ERP) solution for the gold sector. It is now being implemented as a proof of concept (POC) which can in turn be rolled out across the sector in other developing countries.
Challenge
Extractive industries in developing countries play a critical role in driving local economies, providing livelihoods, and contributing to global supply chains. For many nations, realising the full potential of the sector is impeded by a lack of traceability which results in country discount pricing, porous borders, high levels of corruption, and exploitation of artisanal scale miners (ASMs).
These small-scale miners play an important role in the value chain, especially in countries where large-scale operations are either economically unfeasible or environmentally sensitive. Globally, there is growing compliance pressure which is further compounding the challenges faced by developing nations and their ASMs.
In response to these challenges, our client has built a purpose-fit, easy-to-use, integrated IOT and blockchain solution that comprehensively tackles this massive traceability problem from mined ore through to refined gold, specifically focusing on the known ‘first mile’ challenges. Its application can be adapted by-commodity and is not limited to the gold industry alone.
Our client was struggling to clearly articulate the solution in a way that would secure buy-in at a state / government level in a country where they were already consulting to reform the national mine. Overt was tasked with working with the founders to develop a consolidated and compelling pitch and proposal that would help them get the green light to implement and utilise the tech-based traceability solution in-country.

Process
Overt got to work by developing a deep understanding of the industry, the inherent challenges across developing countries, and more-specifically the complexities and problems faced by the target country’s government in respect to their mining sector. This was done in specific reference to maximising the value of their extractive industries, and in this particular instance: gold mining.
Using our bespoke narrative building methodology, we then co-created a clear strategic narrative that outlined the challenges, clarified the lost revenue, illuminated the socio-economic impacts, and quantified the ‘size of the prize’ that was available through implementation and utilisation of our client's traceability solution.
We designed a country-bespoke pitch deck and proposal document which was presented to key state decision makers by our client.

The country has approved the solution (in principle) to be used as the country-wide (ERP) tool for traceability in the gold sector. Our client is now implementing this as a proof of concept (POC) which can be rolled out across the sector, and leveraged as a case study for further developing nations. We continue to support our client through our strategic partnership, and assist with building out additional country-bespoke proposals delivered via our marketing agency.
Thinking Ahead
To date, we have supported them engaging 6 additional countries across the global south, and landing POCs in an additional 3 countries. We have also worked alongside them to explore and enter into a partnership opportunity with a global player in the national sovereignty space. As ESG moves higher and higher on international and local agendas, the criticality and value of our client's solution for resource rich nations becomes more self evident. We look forward to working with them to continue to augment their solution and the associated strategic narrative.
